Anglers,

Our next seminar is on Snapper both in the bay and Offshore. It is on the 10th of June with the BBQ starting at 5:30pm and the talks starting around 6:00pm.

Our guest speakers are John Gooding who we all know from "Outlaw" charters and is also a well known offshore tournament angler/Guru.

Mike Connelly who is regarded as the "pioneer" of snapper on plastics will be giving you all the inside information on how to find and catch the "pitbulls" of the bay.

Shane Beardmore from Furuno Australia who is one of the best operators of all boating electronics in Australia. He will be here to answer questions on sounders and GPS systems you might have.

Bookings are essential as we can only take 100 guests so either get on the phone 07 3287 4888 to Jay Morgan and book or email me at jay@loganrivermarine.com.au.

Kind Regards

  • 3 weeks later...

Just a quick post to tell you all about this evenings Snappaer Seminar.

As a newbie to fishing I must say that I picked up some excellent tips.

The night kicked off with Mike Connaly who apparently is a gun Snapper fisherman (who is sponsored by luma rods and hummingbird - not a plug but thats what he told me)

Anyway Mike came accross extremley knowledgable and I guess after 25 years of snapper fishing he has the credentials to back it up.

Top tips for snapper from Mike:

Size 3-5 in Gulp stick baits that mimic bait fish matched with a 1/4 or so jig head.

Knot - a uni with a half blood knot - doesn't crunch through the eyelets of the rod

Sounder is a must!!

Water depth - anything from 5m on the high tides to around 15-25m, look for gutters and drop offs

Look for bait fish feeding - this is a must!!! Even when the tuna are smashing up the water the snapper will pick up the pieces as they float down..they are lazy feeders.

Using soft plastics...cast long, if in the correct spot snapper will take the bait on the drop. if not lift rod to 12pm and drop again.

Next up was a guy from Furuno Sounders - apparently the ducks guts when it comes to sounders! I don't have a sounder but his tips where handy in relation to color sounders. the more dense the color the bigger the fish. Grey scale sounders...well.....it sounded like your wasting your time. But at the price of these babies they aren’t cheap but you do get what you pay for with Furuno.

Last but not least was a guy from Outlaw Charters.

Now having a quick read of the report re the AFO fishing charter I got the impression that these guys from Outlaw Charters really new a lot about fishing, he said that he had been running charters for 8 years (fishing for a lot more than that), he was humble and easy going, I got a good vibe from him, he didn't seem like an "I" specialist.

Two lucky people scored spot prizes- one dude took home a base model Furuno sounder ( I was pissed cause I need one!) and some other lucky guy took home a Shimano overhead rod/reel combo plus a Shimano fishing shirt!

All in all I think it was worth going down and I learnt a lot about the fish that I really want to catch as it is my favorite eating fish!

Cheers

Sorry I didn't get to meet you Batman I was sitting with Malcolm. I was too busy listening to take notes The shimano prize was a beauty a beastmaster rod and I think it was a triton reel on it.

All speakers were very knowledgeable and informative. I think that the way to go would be to take a tape recorder with you as there was far too much info to take it all in.

I have suggested previously it would be goo if the speakers could hand out notes at the end of these presentations.

John Gooding was very impressive with his unassuming attitude and by the fact that he keeps a complete fishing log recording all data for future use.

If AFO were to have another outside function I think that he would have top be a serious contender.

Cheers

I was also there last night and i also have to admit, a lot of info to take in at once, My problem was i forgot paper to take notes.

Mike did say something about jig heads, like batman said 1/4ounce etc.. but he mentioned 2 sizes one for water to a certain depth then another for beyond as a starting point..... any help with what sizes depth/size he mentioned?

Dave

PS very lucky buggers who won the 2 big prizes:S , but i did get a stubbie cooler:silly:

Yeh mate I think it was 1/8 in 10' up to 1/4 in 20' as a starting point.Look for the current lines,

Yup this is spot on, by the sound of it Snapper sit near the bottom around 20' is about right.

The tip about the current lines seems like a good logical one.

Not to take away from Gary Howard in any way as he is a well known rod builder and for good reason. but:

afaik gary howard rods are usually custom built. as a result can have the price to go with it. If you're after a custom rod on a blank which would most likely come in under the retail price of a premade rod, Lee (pcsolutionman) does a pretty fine job with them as I'm sure a few members can verify:)
