What fish is this freshwater fish

Sorry from the start, no photo but any leeds woudl be good. In my shrimp trap I pulled up a black and brown cod. Little short thing with a diffinate cod mouth, head and tail. It was about 6"long and solid round and aggressive. It loked like a rock cod but I trapped it a long way above the freshwater weir in the Albert so it was not a salt fish.

It looked a bit like a Honeycomb or Wire Netting Cod but darker.

No but thanks fishingnut. It was shorter, fatter and darker with almost like a gropper mouth. Big head and solid body.

I know which one your talking about, not sure about the name of it though. Its similar to a sleepy cod but miniature version. I too have caught them in shrimp nets in the freshwater areas of the Albert river when i was a youngan

It was bigger than my hand? Do bullrouts get that big?

Yes when we electrofished at north Pine elops scooped up a big one that would have gone 6 inches.

If it was bigger than your hand it was probably a bullrout. grow to 35 cm.

If it looked like a sleepy cod it is a flathead gudgeon.
