Fishing Ban Mouth of Brisbane River????

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Has anyone got any further information about the proposed closure of fishing in and about the mouth of the Brisbane River? Todays Paper (Sunday Mail pg 7)talks about self imposed stoppage of commerical fishing in the area but one paragraph talks about closure to recreational fishing as well. It speaks of being "escorted away" by Fisheries Queensland. Does anyone know the area of exclusion? Papers discription was extremely poor.

It says the ban is to come into effect immediately. Thought this forum would have had discuss on this issue (or I am not looking in the right spot)

I think this is an important item that should be clafified for all of us on this forum.

A fishing industry source told The Sunday Mail last night the ban, which could be announced as early as Sunday, was the idea of commercial fishermen who want to allay any public fears about food safety.

Recreational fishos entering inshore areas either side of the mouth of the Brisbane River were likely to be escorted away by Fisheries Queensland patrol boats, the source said.

Commercial fishermen have voluntarily agreed not to fish in the plume until they get the all-clear from the Government.

Fishermen met government officials on Friday to discuss worries about water quality in the aftermath of the floods

Reading between the lines,my interpretation is the commercial fisho`s cant earn an income while the river and sections of the bay are choked with all the sludge in the water,so if the government puts a ban on all fishing in those areas (even if there are no fish in the area, because of the state of the water)some form of compensation could be sought from the government for loss of earnings, because of a government imposed ban.

Am I being too cynical,

"Commercial fishermen have voluntarily agreed not to fish in the plume until they get the all-clear from the Government"...quote.

after all,why would you seek a government ban on something, when you have already voluntarily imposed that ban on yourselves.

This extract taken from an article in the Sunshine Coast Daily newspaper

24th January 2011

“The commercial fishing industry is strongly recommending to all commercial fishermen to not fish in the areas most impacted by the flood run-off,†a statement said.

That recommendation would remain in place until at least January 31. Fisheries Minister Tim Mulherin welcomed the “sound decision†by the seafood industry.

“Anecdotal evidence from 1974 suggests the plume will dissipate in a few weeks and marine species will return to the area,†he said......end of quote

The most impacted area has apparently been identified as from St.Helena Is. south to the mouth of Brisbane River and north to Shorncliffe.

Going by the "said statement" of the Fisheries Minister I don`t think he knows of a blanket ban either.

I think that should read "from the Bris Riv mouth south to St Helena Is. and North to Shorncliffe"

or more simply "from St Helena Island to Shorncliffe"

Been out all day today, fisheries were at Atkinsons reef, no problem, police warned of debris in the river. trawlers were working all over the bay. the mullet & whiting were all back in Boggy Creek. debris was minimal (but be wary, it's still around). looks like it's cleaning up nicely. lots of fish around near Bulwer.

Don't know what the Australian Day celebration was at the Tangalooma wrecks, but ther was about fifty boats there.

Certainly no news out there from Fisheries or Police about any closures.

There are new articles posted yesterday in most QLD papers about fish now getting a redspot fungus due to the contamination in the waters, they reference Brisbane river & Moreton Bay. I guess make of it what you will as the media are in the business to sell papers before anything else

Here's a link to the herald sun story
