Yeh we went to see the nuclear powered one that was here last year.

The U.S.S Ronald Reagan I think it was.

Impressively large and apparently it does 55knots flat strap  !!! That’s a big boat to move that fast!

Joel ;)

And look at the size of the plane in this picture at the bottom left of the photo. That is a good sized plane. And then compare that to the first photo!!!!

Got some relo's in town from overseas, so thought we might wet the bottom of the Jolly Roger and head up-river for a look - anyone got any advice on boating restrictions in the immediate vicinity? Also, where exactly is she berthed - is that the grain terminal in the background?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

yeh Cliffy if it's anything like last time, there is a massive area around the boat that's out of bounds but it's still a good view of it.

And i'm sure that if you just motor towards the mouth it will be kinda hard to miss. :P

I was out there on saturday morning, got some good pics.

I was talking to an SES worker, he said that if you got to close or decided to motor your boat straight at the ship you would be shot. Apparently they are at war so it seems fair enough.

Here are some pics. [img size=492]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/USS_Kittyhawk_005.JPG

Just a quick thing, I went on a \"Captains Cruise\" on the HMAS Melbourne from Brissy to Sydney a couple of year ago and I was just standing down the back end looking over the side when the film on my clip on sun glasses started to bubble. Then I noticed a sign that said \"no standing, hi radiation wave zone when electric equipment is in use\". My memory hasent been the same since and the old fella shrunk. Nice photos guys.

We went past it on friday night and were shadowed by cop boats even though we were hundreds of metres away. It was quite an impressive ship.

I reckon it would be more useful somewhere on the bottom of moreton bay as an artificial reef.

that is an unreal boat with some serious firepower. I wonder how close the kayaker would get before he had a JDAM land on his head:pinch:

Hope everyone who went to have a look see had their lead undies on. I would imagine she would have her radars fired up to keep an eye on the sky:blink:

OK guys this is what I know about the exclusion zones etc of the ship, It was a 50 meter zone(may have been extended now). If a vessel/craft enters the zone and is a \"credible\" threat then the yanks can open fire. The ship is classed as American soil, there for an attack/threat on the ship is a attack/threat on America. With the agreements between the US and Australian governments they can and will shoot to kill to protect the ship.

How do I know this? I worked as Security for theese types of vessel's back in Tassie,

OH and be carefull fishing outside of the river, I'll bet my balls theres a sub shadowing the big girl around as per the procedure:evil:

Booty you maybe able to shed a bit of light on the subject, I have'nt worked security for 18 months. Lots would have changed in that time.

You mean 55kph or 30 knots. Still pretty damn fast for something that big.

No dhess! 55 knots!!

Dad was in the city when the sailors hit the town and everyone was on the piss, and they were saying that they have handheld GPS's and in flat water they crank her up and she pulls out 55 knots according to their handhelds which are usually pretty accurate. So there you go, it would be awsome so see it carving up some rough water at even half that speed!

Serious?

Wikipedia says top speed 56kmh+.

I guess the reason they say + is that no one really knows how quick it is.

I've heard of destroyers and a few cruisers that are good for 40 knots but 55 knots is crazy fast.
