Thresher Shark Capture

Yesterday while fishing out over the shelf we hooked up a Thresher Shark down deep on the bottom in near 300 meters of water.

These fish swipe at their prey with their huge tails and this fish did just that and we hooked him in the tail which wreaked havoc on both us and the gear for a good hour or so.

We were down to about 4 turns of line on the reel at one stage in over 3 knots of tide and about 10 knots of Northerly wind blowing.

The reel had 1000m of new braid on it so we had every bit of a kilometer of line out between us and the fish.

After some quick boat maneuvering we got some line back onto the reel and we began working on the fish using the boat in reverse to aquaplane the fish up.

Eventually we got it to the boat and it was hooked in the tail on a 16/0 circle hook

The fish came up very lethargic due to being dragged up backwards and heavily wrapped up in the trace line so we pulled him on board and removed all the line and took some quick pics and released him.

After some mucking around he swam away very slowly so hopefully he will survive ok.

Threshers are a beautiful shark and it was so nice to see it swim away.
