SOFT BAITS

By Miles Rushmer

We'd found a fairly productive snapper ground early spring where the fish were obviously foraging over the worm beds down off Papamoa Beach.

Small, scattered marks on the sounder

suggested fish between the 10-20m

mark  so softbaits were deployed and

we were straight into them catching

limits of nice fat pan-sized snapper.

I gutted a few of them and found the

biggest mud worms in them that I'd

ever seen!

The fish were there for weeks on

end, and each trip down there on

board "Ultimate Brandys" saw easy and

enjoyable fishing had by all.

One day the Boss, Bruce Porter, produced a bag of Allens Jelly Worms,

but before we could grab a mouthful, he'd whipped one onto a hook,

and with a wry grin flicked it over the side on a half ounce jighead! .

Of course much hilarity flew about the boat, and speculation about whether it would work.....

and the cost effectiveness of them if they did! At $2.95 for a packet of twenty baits, they were a darn sight cheaper than $13 for a packet of four 7inch Lime Tiger Gulp baits!

Well.....whaddya know, a hit, a strike, and up came another good wee snapper ....Point proven

Bruce....

He reckons only the Allens variety seem to work,

whilst the Starburst brand just don't seem to pull the fish!

And with several varieties in the one packet  resembling Chartreuse, Lime Tigers, Nuclear Chickens,

and a few other leftfield lookers, it seems it might pay to keep a pack or two of

these "cheap" alternatives stashed on the boat where the kids can't find them!

I guess even fish have a sweet tooth! Makes you wonder about using jellybabies on ya tarakihi droppers!
