hinze dam restricted access 2008

In early 2008 work will commence to raise the spillway by 9 metres.

As soon as work commences the only boating access will be via the dirt ramp near Pine Creek on the Nerang- Murwullimbah road. The ramp is about 7ks from the existing ramp and has very little parking at the moment but there is a fair ammount of flat ground that would be needed to be slashed.

The existing ramps at the dam wall will be taken over by the contractors and the dirt ramp near the intake tower on the eastern arm will also be closed as the intake tower will be raised.

I do not know if the existing picnic areas will be closed.

This will be a bit of a pain as this will make the eastern arm of the dam out of range for a lot of fishos as they will not have the battery reserve power to go there.

There has so far been no decision as to where the new ramps will go. Apparently the local stocking assn will be responsinle for the costs of the new ramps.

I think that if this is true it is extremely unfair.

( At lake sampsonvale the local assn has to pay for and maintain the ramp but that ramp is not open to the general public)

It would be great if the government/council were to pay for and build the ramp now so that the ramp would be accessible at low water levels.

The good news is that no timber is going to be removed from the foreshores ( too dangerous- workplace health and safety reasons} so there will be plenty of structure for the fish.

Maybe the stocking association should start a fund raising drive?

I reckon a lot of fisho's would put their hand in their pocket for a decent and accessable ramp!

What about local business built around the dam - like Steve?

Steve has helped us out, maybe we should help him out by letting the Gold Coast City Council know that only one dirt ramp access during construction is not acceptable! Also put pressure on them to provide the new ramps.

Hinze has regulary overflowed in the last year, as has Baroon, also around 80% currently, which also is slated for a rise in the Dam wall.

There are plans in place to raise most dam walls around south east queenslandthat have not already been lifted, ( except wivanhoe and somerset! ).

Prior to early 2006 Hinze was very low for several years and as a result of this a pipeline was extended to the gold coast from the brisbane water supply. To pay for the pipeline the gold coast council signed a contract that they would take a guaranteed mininium ammount of water whether they needed it or not. ( like now )

Our leaders in their wisdom ( keep your head in the sand then you cant smell the sh!t mentality )did not design the pipeline to be a two way pipeline.

The coast has had severe water restrictions for many years and was one of the first local councils to say yes we have a problem and actually commence to do something.

It is just that these things take time ( Like 3 years to commence construction )
