To oil or to silicone... that is the question?

Winching the boat back on the trailer today has got me thinking.

Where should one person oil and where should they silicone? Is there a specific answer for a specific job, or is it personal preference?

Let me start... winch mechanism on boat. What should I use?

I'd grease the gears and bearing surfaces and maybe a light spray of silicone on the cable.

i would say grease /oil for the gears /winch

oil/grease will wreck the rubbers and nolathane bushes so silicone spray there i guess or special rubber grease or vasoline

bearing /grease/that marine water proof grease is good stuff mite last a lot longer too

Inox on the winch (all over the winch, cables, gears you name it)

marine grease inside the rollers. (on the pins)

we use it on the landcruiser 25 year old steering that is seized up comes apart with inox ,never had a prob pulling it a part since and the landcruiser swims in fresh or salt water.

yeah either lithium grease or inox.

I inox as well. Not cheap but good stuff.

Get a 5L drum and it works out much cheaper.

I only use grease on the grease nipples and inox or fish oil everywhere else.

What is Inox? Not heard of that being a Pom! What are it's constituents?

Basically its the lanolin out of sheep wool.

Its a non silicone, lubricant spray that stops corrosion. Also displaces water. Its a bit like WD40 but better.

Nope both are made by the same company just different products. Both have similar properties and uses.

Lanox is meant to be better for some applacations than inox and vice versa. Not quite sure of the details though.

Mate of mine absoluely swears by lanolin and uses it on all of his boat and 4wd gear but he is a kiwi, so not sure where else he would would use it!

I use Inox on the winch parts and cable. No noises and no hint of corrosion.

i used to use inox until one day i spayed my yamaha 50 4 stroke motor and it ate away and distriod some ruber componants i dont know why it distriod some bits of ruber yet left other bits unharmed items inclued the soft part at the back of the cowling, a rubber boot around the oil drainage nut and the rubber inserted grip on the fwd / rev lever mounted on the tiller arm . i now use lanotec its great but i dont like the tacky residue that is left from it it attracts dust/grim buildup. i havent hade any problems with corrosion.

Inox may affect some natural rubber products with continual long term use.
