Leatherjacket ?

In the day I used to go spear fishing for these fellas around the kelp beds of Watsons bay and eastern shores of Sydney.

The spear was a broomstick with a single prong, the "fan tailed leather jackets", (don't know where fan belly comes from probably ignorant scientists) swims very sluggish and is easily pronged with a hand held spear.

Very good table fish.

cheers

they definitely aren't poisonous- actually they're very nice to eat but rarely get to a size worth taking. the exception is the chinaman leatherjacket which is often annoying when deep sea fishing- they've got a beak like a golden toadfish and can pretty much monster anything other than thick guage wire. you may be thinking of the triggerfish- they are similar looking but found in warmer water and there are as many types of them as there are... well... leatherjacket!

Great eating, and easy to prepare too, just put a nick in the skin behind the trigger and bend the head backwards, it peels the skin off and guts it in one, They sometimes sell these in fish shops as cream fish

you are probably hearing about the trigger fish of the coral reef, they can be very bad for Ciguatera toxin

Yeah right. I'll have to give it a try. Cheers
