Monday 30.5.11 Gold Coast trip

Decided to go to the Gold Coast for an afternoon flick session for some flathead.

Conditions were perfect, the tide was last of ebb and first 2 hours of the flood.

Found myself a nice little sandbank with a dropoff, that looked a likely spot.

On my second cast caught an undersized flathead, only 29 cm, who was released for me to catch another day when he makes the meter mark. He seemed to taking a liking to the Berkley "Swimming Mullet".

About 20 min had passed, with only a couple of small bumps.

Decided to put on a Berkley "Minnow" in the Pilchard colour.

About 3rd cast, "Bang", another flathead. This time a 38cm flatty.

These things really do fight well in the shallows.

However, he was again released, and told to go wake up his bigger friends.

I had read on this site about the Damiki Shads. I had gone to BCF to buy some in the "5", but none in stock.

So I bought a pack of "3' in the red colour.

So keen to give it a try, I cast it out. Well, first lift and flick, "Bang", solid hook up.

I eventually got it to shore, as I was wading out. Thought I would lose it for sure.

This time a 48cm, flathead. He was going nowhere. Nice solid fish.

Next hour was a little slow, only picking up another 35cm flathead, again released.

Deciding to move to another spot I go to, I decided to start walking across the shallows.

The tide was now coming in and starting to come up over the sandbank again.

I thought what the hell, I might as well have a couple of casts while heading back.

The water was only about shin deep, but you never know.

I put on my favourite little Berkley "Swimming Mullet" again.

Couple of lifts and flicks, then "Whamo".

"Geez", he took some drag. Got it to the shore, and another great fish.

This time a healthy 56cm flathead.

As a thankyou for giving me that bit of fun, I told him to go home and be careful of cunning fisherman with plastics. Caught one more undersized one, then decided to call it quits.

A great 3 hr session, heaps of fun and a gorgeous day.

To add the images you need to hit INSERT after you ADD the image.

To put them in specific places within the text you need to click where you want them to appear before hitting INSERT.

Cheers

Thank-you so much for the advice. Will brush up my computer skills as well as my fishing.

Will try it with my next report.

Lol,

Must have left blood in the water from your profile injury Kiwiboy.

The flathead were chomping like tailor the whole time.

Ohh, and a couple tasted good to. :P

I had been using the Squidgies with a lot of success.

However, yesterday it was Berkley Gulps that claimed all the fish.

I think it just depends on the day.

Flathead will take anything

Flathead are just ''PIGS'' they would take a rag on a hook....So easy to catch these fish :)

Nice session there mate, can't wait till I can master plastics!

Thanks Jords.

The best thing I could have ever done was leave the bait at home.

I was buying the plastics, but after an hour or so of not catching anything, i would revert back to bait.

Without the bait, i was forced to used the plastics, and i am so glad I did.

It is starting to pay off and once you catch a couple , you will gain confidence.
