Avoiding catfish

Does anyone know a way of avoiding catfish. Was fishing yeterday just up from Berellan point on the Brisbane river near Ipswich, and caught some nice sized prawns and mullet in the cast for live bait. It is the first time I have fished this area with livies and was hoping to get on to a few bream with the prawns and something big with the mullet. But my plan was foiled by the catties, man those things can eat! My two live mullet ended up catching Catties of only double the length of the bait. Interestingly the smallest prawn I put out ended up catching the largest catfish.

I must admit the catties are fun to catch but if I could have gone an hour without catching anything and then ended up getting a bream or better still a salmon.... or even a bite off from a shark then I would have been more than happy.........

Is this normal for the area? or are the catties running because of the recent rain?
