An announcement made today involves bag limits for southern bluefin tuna, which have been changed to one fish per angler per day.

As keen NSW gamefishermen will be aware, SBT stocks have staged a comeback in recent seasons with quality fishing on offer from ports such as Bermagui, Jervis Bay and Sydney during the winter months. Despite their resurgence, SBT remain classified as “endangeredâ€.

Given this, and taking onboard the fact that the average size of SBT in NSW waters is anywhere from 30-100 kilos, is it unreasonable to have a daily bag of one fish per angler per day?

We’d argue one decent tuna per day is enough for anyone. After all, how much tuna can you eat?
