James's first marlin

We woke at 2.30am yesterday morning to hopefully get James his first marlin. By the time we got lures following the boat it was 6.30am. We started around Cape Moreton and had no interest so we headed for Flinders reef and then onto Hutchies. We trolled for 2 hrs, dodging another 5 boat trolling and there were another 8 boats bait fishing. Mid morning we saw one large game boat hook up and then moments latter a dancing marlin on the end of the line could be seen. Unfortunately it was short lived and the fish won its freedom. We spent another hour without any inquiries and did not see anybody else hooked up.

We head back to the Cape to see if anything had changed. We had been towing smallish lures at between 5-6 knots all day without success. Time for a change, I upgraded one of the small lures to a medium and then increased the troll speed to 8kts. Well I don't know if it was the change or just luck but, 10 minutes in and the TLD 20 sings on the upgraded lure. we look behind the boat there is a marlin horizontal mid air. :woohoo:

We cleared the lines and James is fighting his first marlin. After a quick an uneventful fight we had it boat side.

a couple of quick snaps which I'll post latter, (no great because the camera lens fogged up :( )

We were both very excited to get his first marlin aboard. it had been a big day so we headed for home.

I have been told latter that there were fish caught at Hutchies in the afternoon.

The video tells the rest. ;)

I caught the ones the other day on Pakula lures. Yesterday's was on a top gun lure.

I bought a Pakula rat pack set of 5 lures specially picked for small black marlin. Came with DVD on where to place in the spread and why. I watched a lot Peter Pakula YouTube videos to get started.

Skirt lures between 6-9 inches long.

Like anything just gave go.

Awesome stuff Wayne, you've really worked out this trolling caper, great work. I went to a fishing seminar up at Redcliffe probably a year and a half ago that had Peter Pakula speak at it (was about marlin fishing from trailer boats) and he was VERY good to listen to. His website has heaps of good info and pictures of how to put a spread out. You're obviously a very quick learner Wayne (well, either that or just extremely lucky ....).
