queensland Whiting Are Warming Up!

The new moon in August has traditionally been a good month for sand whiting as they start their six month spawning period. It was a good week this week landbased in the Southport Broadwater and the Nerang River. There have been plenty of fish over the 30 cm mark, but alas none over the 40 cm mark yet. Cribb Island worms, surf worms and yabbies have all produced fish at the half dozen spots I have road tested before things get a bit more serious.

Looks nice what tide did you catch them on I’m horrible at whiting fishing and most of them I get them then fishing for flathead or bream and whiting are sometimes by catch often underside? And info would be good

Do you find the surf worms as effective as the other baits ?

@kmcrosby78 I generally fish different locations than Wayne. 

@ellicat surf worms do surprisingly well, but sometimes yabbies are the best bait and of course the easiest to get. 

@Breaming with bro I have spots that can produce on most stages of the tide but the run-out tide is consistently the most productive.

killing it mate. Great to see. I love seeing kids catching fish and its mostly why we do the shellfish reef restoration as I probably wont live to see much benefits.

That's awesome! Great job. Some lovely feeds there. And good to get your kids right into it! 

I've only caught a few legal whiting in my life, as they are quite hard to target around me (Brisbane River). My dad loves them though (his favourite fish, or one of them), so I may need to convince him to take me for a session down there.

Awesome Daryl. Ive been recently getting back into fishing and spending a bunch of time on the Nerang. I had a crack at the whiting for a 4 hour session around the Monaco St section on yabbies but only caught pesky bream.

Im thinking this section is a bit quiet for them and i need to head down river more and sound out bits of the river that show the short rises and falls. Am i on the right track?

@Do$tylz  I have been getting them around the Monaco St stretch so they are there but their are plenty of bream mixed in with them. 

Those little sand waves through the river are where they hang out.
