queensland A few bream from the sunny coast.

Hey guys,

Will and I fished some canals on the sunshine coast on sunday and monday.

Mainly caught bream from man made structure on gulps. But there was a few caught poppers and Berkley Bass minnows.

Loads of big bust ups and plenty of expensive lures were lost.

Tally-

sunday- 25 bream, 3 small flatties and 1 tiny cod.

Monday- 6 bream

Not much size to them, only 4 over 30cm FL for 20 hours fishing as Will says he usually gets 2/3 every session. :blush:

Plenty of massive bustoffs which were quite frustrating when not much is being landed(2nd day that is).

We were fishing the kawana canals.

Heaps of different gulps ay, shrimps and turtle backs mainly along with a few on minnows.

And yes we saw the bream taking the surface popper down.

yeah, its not a small bream by any means, but I'd prefer it to be much higher! I've been luring for bream for just over a year and just haven't scored any monsters. It'll come!

Ive only just started, only scored one so far at noosa, not to bad for a first bream on lures i thought , Have tried in the river abit for no succes.. Going to the tweed river for a week soon, so would like to get a couple and hopefully one over 30cm..

Tim you should try throwing some plastics off some of the rocks around Noosa or even straddy, some huge bream around, I got my pb of 52.5cm off the rocks at noosa and get plenty well over 40cm. this is on bait but they would take plastics. my biggest on plastics is 44cm fromt he mooloolah river

you would be surprised how many fish there are around that size. A few months back at the mooloolah river around the pro boats a school of around 20 fish came cruising past, not one would have been under 50cm. they wernt feeding and wouldnt touch anything on offer, I think they were spawning. Me dad got one off the rocks at caloundra about 6-7 years ago that was a little longer at just over 54cm frnm memory but it was a very very skinny fish wouldnt have weighed more than 1kg )

oh ok true.. maybe the 50ich cm models get alot smarter and avoid peoples lines ect because you dont hear of them being caught to much these days..

well not in this part of the country thats for sure. down south its a differant story.

I think a lot of the bigger fish frequint the rocky headlands and beaches and only come into the rivers to spawn (at which point there not interested in feeding). after spawning they head back out to find some tucker after the dirty deed. spawning is usually around the new moon in Aug and Sep. late Sep to middle of Oct the bream seem to go off around the rocks, but most are out of condition and a little thin

Fish that size would be 30-40 years old too so you'd expect them to have learnt the difference between a lure and a fish by then.

i agree with Lee. the larger model usually feeds around the rocks. one of my friend's doing ISO fishing from the rocks down south and the bream he got were just impressive.loads of 50cm ones

they are a different species down there though and they tend to get bigger.

yeh but even the bream around the central coast of NSW dwarf most of the bream from QLD and they are not black bream they are the same species.

Hey Dan, 30-40 years old is a bit of an exaggeration, i'm pretty sure bream only live to about 12 or so.

a bream of 38cm is around 20+ years of age, they grow very slowly a bream over 50cm would be around 40 years of age

the average bream doesnt get to legal size until its about 6 years and and a 1kg bream will be over 20 years old

yeh 23cm at 6 years of age and thats there fastest growth period. I think the size and bag limits for bream really need to be looked at. a bream under 28cm is not worth keeping IMO and a bag of 5 PP should be sufficiant

Yeh i'd rather bigger size limits than greenzones but u will still have some dickheads that will take undersize fish
