Skeg Repair

Hi guys,

Broke the skeg on my new driveway which is a nightmare to get up.

Can I just bolt one a skeg guard like the photo or does it need welding? 

Don't want to replace whole bottom on an old 2 banger.

Get it welded back on   then you can fit a skeg guard as well for more peace of mind.

Skeg guards are not a sked replacement, only a protection add on.

Maybe get a quote for the welding option. I broke the bottom 30mm off my Skegness about 10 years ago and fitted a skeg guard and haven’t had a problem since.

Pretty much what I thought I'll get a mate to weld it back on and order one of those.

Careful with the heat. 

You have seals in the gearbox that will melt easily. 

Cold wet rags wrapped around the gearbox will help when welding .

Any decent alloy man will know this and how to approach the job.

Yep been there done that on my first tinnie running aground. Ended up drilling and attaching a skeg guard as I didn't have the broken remnants.

It was on a little 25hp, no real discernible difference between the actual skeg vs skeg guard, but then again that tinnie didn't really have much speed on plane.

I ordered this today after talking to the Ozpropellers guys.

Do not need to reweld skeg on just need about 2 inchs left to bolt this on to.

I'll try it and i can always remove it and weld the broken bit back on.

Suggest you Ring your insurance company , that damage should be covered , I’d be having your drive shaft and prop checked out as well. If your drive shaft and prop are damaged it could lead to expensive gear box repairs down the track.

Quick and easy install took all of 10 mins. Snug fit and feels pretty strong. Take it for a run tomorrow to see. For under $200 I'm happy.

I didn't do it while on the water while running only hit the concrete lip on the driveway so should be OK. If anything the steering mount would be the concern.

Would have been nerve racking drilling into the left over old skeg in case of another crack.

But good as gold now. Aside from resale value there will be very little in performance difference in steering
