The age old question...

How to secure your catch and/or equipment from thieves..

 

I am building a prototype with off the shelf items.  I have a background in business and supply chains so am experienced with bringing costs under control for production runs, but my other question is - how much is the recreational fisherman willing to spend on a solution?

How do I know the guy I witness checking a pot that is not mine is the owner of the pot or a raider?

To be honest what is needed is a purple ink bomb in the pot that is disabled by a transponder in the owners boat.

Apart from that it is only the owners that have to catch the thief in the act and deal with him approriately (nothing is out of bounds IMHO).

Who can develop the ink bomb and transponder for sale?

Anybody coming to shore covered in ink should be flogged by any bystander.

I've got a solution in the works mate. Still a little bit to do, but will keep the info flowing.  No doubt the entire community feel the same about it.

I think your question might revolve around how much is spent on a pot. I would suggest that with most pots in the $30 to 50 mark, they would spend $5 to 10 to keep them safe.

Those who spend $50 to $150 per pot might spend up to $50 to safeguard them however those who crab well:

* have ways of protecting/camouflaging  their pots already and perhaps have less need of a solution; or/and

*  don't bother in high traffic areas or in times of high flow.

Surprisingly my pots don't get raided in a high traffic area i go to regularly.....I was expecting to get raided regularly there. 

The quiet places i crab get checked by others regularly.

I might give trot lining a go...
