Really need a net there. I was worried about that flattie bringing it up over the fence. It was fine though and was thrashing around like crazy till I released it. Brisbane river fish are tough as nails.

fish won't be hurt in any ways without a net as long as no gaff's used. but when fishing 4lb line there, anything including large bream will be hard to land

when i used to fish rock walls in northern new south wales alot i had a net mounted on an extendable smimming pool cleaner pole

worked a treat

what kg/lb line do you use?

I have 6 lb on my spinning rod at the moment...

but it is setup for Trout

i was using 23lb braid, 20lb leader when i got those bream. but next time i'll use 2lb gel-gun with 6lb leader

Ok so you were trying for larger cod but you reckon light line is the go.

I might have to get myself to a fishing shop and see whats around, my 6 lb line is just the standard dark green stuff, its ok but is probably a bit more stretchy than braid.

mono can do the job but braid's definitely a better choice. don't go too light if ur using expensive lurea as there r heaps of big cod and flattie around

Yeah ideally you want 4-6lb braid with 4-8lb leader but at night it doesn't matter that much. Just the heavier line makes it harder to avoid pulling the hooks.

Spot on kriso and Dan. Anything over a kilo in weight should be supported when removing from the water. This would be particularly pertinent to fish like flathead where a lot of weight is found below the head. They also have a very distinct neck area to stress. I think Leanne's post provided some links to some very good articles.

I'll dig 'em up if anyone's interested.
