Totally New to fishing, (and Australia)

HiAll.

Im Tony, Just moved to Brisbane from the UK, and I want to start fishing, Ive never really fished before, so Im looking for any advice at all. What rods, reel, basic gear I could get just to get started. I live in the Bretts Wharf area at the moment, so any advice re tackle shops would be greatly appreciated.

I intend to take my youg daughter along, so Im just looking for fun fishing at the moment.

Any help, advice, greatly appreciated.

welcome to the site and country. for gear if your not wanting to spend a lot then head to kmart,big w and get yourself some cheapo stuff - it will do you for now. look at getting a 6ft 6in - 7ft rod - the ones from these places will most likelt be 2 piece so good for storing them in the car. line wise if your still new to the game then mono would be better as its pretty cheap and id suggest 6-10lb mono to start up with.

if your plannning on just chucking some bait out and praying then just the basics such as sinkers, swivels and hooks will do you. all these can be bought from the same places.

if your wanting to get into lure fishing then your gonna need to open up your wallet futher and look at going to jones tackle lutwych or head to one of the burbs and go to bcf and pick up some better quality gear such as graphit rod of some sort, braid or gsp line and the lures.

Mate BCF is a tackle chain, it stands for Boating Camping and Fishing, Its basically like a big-w or kmart but just boating, camping and fishing.

What namyau said is good advice, 6ft6 - 7ft rod 2-4 or 3-5kg line strength with a 2500 size spinning reel, Also get yourself some 8lb line or their abouts.

Now if this all makes no sense to you then i would suggest going to a specialist tackle store where you can get good advice from other fisherman. If you can get to lutwyche their is Jones Tackle on Sandgate Rd or in Woolongabba theirs Mossops fishing tackle. Theirs also one in Cooparoo, The tackle store or something like that, Just google Fishing tackle stores in Bretts Wharf area or something like that and see what comes up, If you go to one of these places they will sort you out, These stores are a bit more expensive BUT offer much better service which is what you will need.

Just to clarify

Jones Tackle is on LUTWYCHE road, across the road from lutwyche shopping centre.

There's a store in Carseldine on the main road there, just before the gympie arterial called The Tackle Shop

I think the one in cooparoo you're referring to shrimpo is tackle warehouse
