catfish for crab bait?

catfish! someone told me they where good crab bait, tried for 3 days in maroochy river with nothing, i have fished the same area before with some luck - either crabs or small fish.... this time nothing, bait untouched... wrong place/time or bad bait?

Mate there is a hot topic running about cat fish!

I beleive they are good bait but there's an old saying only crab in the months that have an R in the name

IE. probably won't see any good catches till september

I've come up zip on servo mullet lately but I have it on good authority that a perforated tin of dog or cat food works a treat!

Yeh the only thing i use is the small tins of cat food mostly tuna based stuff . It works a treat.

Yeah, rememer watching the program by Malcolm Douglas and he used a can of cat food and caught some decent muddies.

Home brand pilchard cat food has been effective on the muddies for me, chicken frames are ok to. Ive seen Pro's use whole chicken quartered, must get them out of date. Whole mullet in a dilly is always gangbusters for sandies.

Hey all... My uncle owns a fishin hut up north off tha Barratta Ck.. It is known for the crabs and he raves on about how catties are good crab bait cause of the oil they produce.... Hope this helps... Jdmorto!!

a couple of times ive had a live cattie out there for sharks and brought in a dead cattie with a big buck hanging on haha

i normalyl leave my catties in the sun for 3 days before using em as crab bait. works a treat .

Home brand pillie's in a can no more arrr crap / baits frozen solid / or got no pot bait???

I like to use fresh fish heads from the fish mongers and I buy them the day or night I tend to go crabbing . Fresh is always best . the crabs like the heads because theres alot of sinew and entrails and stuff hanging of them. Try as they like they cant resist.

stayed on a house boat at noosa one time, after all the rain. caught lotsa catties, threw the pot out with one in there with a few slits in it and the next day had 4 big bucks and a jenny in there, all went back as we didn't feel like crab lol. i beleive it just depends on the location used, more upstream for catties, mullet and the like closer to the mouth or in the bay.
