hardiheads?

Anyone know anything about this bait?

I was using them up in Rainbow beach and loved the way they stay on your hook, unlike pillies.

Never caught a thing though.

Brought a few packets back to use in the river, do you think they would be any good there?

I have only ever used fresh hardyheads as bait there ok. There a bit hard to get in a cast net but are easy to get on a bait jigs.Have always had trouble keeping them alive in the bait tank I think they stress out to easy.This is why I only keep a few then jig for more if I need them. When the spotties move trough the bay bunch up 3-4 live haryheads through the nose on a 4'o-5'o hook works well.

On the few dead hardyheads that I have used fishing around the docks for squire I found that by removing the scales helps the hook ups occur.

There not a vary oily bait like the humble pillie and I think as a result alot of fisher persons wont use them as bait But they do make ok bait I think.

Jamie - they're pretty good if you can get them live. Dead - there are better but they're still bait. On a scale for me it'd be inline with small diver whiting as bait.

mate floating them along the rocks at amity point the do well on big bream only thing is that big bream and rocks,there is about 10 to 2 of landing them but a great bait there.brad

Mate I've caught a couple of flatties down near the gateway bridge on frozen hardis, worth a shot

i don't bother with them unless they are really fresh- the lack of oil in them makes them pretty tasteless after a while in the water. i used to gang them on a couple of long shanks for trevs and bream.

I used to catch them in a drag net and use them around raby bay rocks. I got onto quite a few big bream using small hardi heads. About 3 inches long. Also, on larger live and even dead ones I have caught tailor.

Cheers folks will give them a go in the river this week.

Still havent mastered the old cast net and start to lose the will to live after a while with it.

If you descale them, will that affect their durability on the hook?

I normally make a gang hook with 3 size 1 or size 4 hooks, Heat the eye up, open it up with some side snips to place next hook in then cramp it closed with some pliers. Works very well. Bait it like a pillie

i scale them then fillet them..deadly on the bream in the river rock walls unweighted

I've only ever used them live around the pin. Biggest flatty landed whent 74 cm.

Clearish with a blue silver strip, and very stiff scales

never had anythign ever hit them dead and nothign take the whole thing live they shash the head and that was it
