anchor float ???

seen a boat with a dirt big lfoat on the anchor rope not sure why ????? any idea's what its for

If its free running(the anchor rope goes through a large metal ring that's attached to the float) it could be for retrieving the anchor. If its tied to the main anchor line it could be so he can drop his anchor line to chase a large fish quickly and then return. If its tied to a small secondary anchor it could be used as a marker, i.e. for marking the starting point for his drifts over a reef. I'm sure there are more uses too.

I used to run one of those rigs when i had a kayak. Exactly what Uthrax said.

I used it Mainly for detaching quickly when hooked onto a big fish.

Yea... either to drop the anchor and chase a fish, but more likely its his retrieving float to pull larger anchors off the bottom.

It clips on to the anchor line with a karibeener and you basically drive in a big circle around the float pulling away slowly from the anchor location but remaining in the cirle. Doing this drags the anchor line through the karibeener untill the anchor is hanging in the water just below the float then you pull it all in.

Much easier than lifting a lump of steel vertically off the bottom
