I am in the market for an outboard to suit my 10 foot tinny.

Thanks to feedback on another thread, I think I need a short shaft, probably between 4-6 horsepower. Can be any maker or age, MUST be dependable and well maintained.

I have been on ebay, and there are a number of likely candidates, but I would rather buy from another AFO member if possible.

I'm not much of a mechanic, so I don't want anything that needs work.

If anyone has one that sounds like it would fit the bill, please let me know either by PM or on this thread.

Hmm you could look at brand new tohatsu 3.5 with just foward if u shopped around u could probably get for 750 or the foward and neutral for 840. pretty good motors with inbuilt fuel tank.

There is also 5hp Yammies at Endless summer marine for $1300. I no these are new. I just looked at Trading post and theirs nuthing but it comes out on Thursday so its worthwile getting in quick.

Not sure whether you are away or need to factor in to your motor purchase the following.

4hp and under powered vessels do not require registration

6hp and under powered vessels do not require a licence to operate them.

Just food for thought.

I was aware of the rego and licence issue, it was one of the reasons I bought such a small tinny!

My tinnies 4.9m and goes along quite well on 6hp (10kph) or 55lb electric (4kph). It is registered for when I use the 6hp. But I reckon it would go alright with a 4hp.

i have a 2 hp that you are very welcome to try on the back to give you a idea on performance itll be slow though it pushed my 14 ft tinny at a slow ish troll spd ok but id deffinately buy bigger

I have bought a motor off ebay, pick it up this weekend!

It is a 6 month old Yamaha 4HP 4 Stroke.

Here's hoping that it is just what the doctor ordered.

Here is a tip Rocket, if the boats not registered it only has to meet general safety obligation, not normal safety rules, also there is no capacity limit! (Not that I would recommend 6 blokes and an esky in that size boat!)

When I bought it, the boat had a 6hp and is registered as such at the moment. Now that I have a 4hp on it, and it is not required to be registered, do I just call Dept of Tran and get it \"unregistered\"?

Do I get any of my rego money back ?

If Rego is in your name you may get something back. Just take the papers into Qld Transport and cancel it.

But the rego is probably only $60 a year for that size boat, hardly worth the effort. Ring them up and ask what sort of refund you will get, you'll probably find you may as well just let it expire. (You have to take the numbers off once it is not registered, or you could be charged with fraud)
