Offshore DIP 26 July

Hi all,

Headed out with a mate in his kevlacat offshore from DIP / Fraser last Saturday.

Found a big school of sardines just outside the bar, loaded up the tank and headed about 18nm to the first spot. First drop was a little disappointing, but it wasn't long before some quality fish came over the side. Brown Maori cod to 5kg, a 58cm grassy and a cracking pearlie just under 4kg all found their way into the esky.

The plan was to do an overnighter and work our way north about another 20nm to some good areas for reds but the weather wasn't having any of that. With regular squalls moving through, a very sloppy ocean and the wind anything from 15kn - glass the call was made to fish until dusk and then head in.

We moved about 10nm south to an area that has produced good snapper in the past. With a full live well hopes were high. And for once we were not disappointed. In two hours 12 snapper found their way into the bag, best going just over 6kg. Add to that some more pearlies, grassies, Maori cod and tuskies the esky was looking pretty good. Throw in a token hussar to end the trip and back in we went.

Thankfully the bar was well behaved and we found out way safely back to the ramp.

Looking forward to the next trip out there! Bring on the reds!!

Cheers guys,

Benno

Sorry for the crappy pic...

Looks like a top trip there, Benno. I bet those cod were tasty.

Toss up between the cod and the pearlies I think... Cod fight harder so maybe they win. ;)

Wayne - that lot just fitted in my 125L evakool... The esky on the boat can take a lot more.

CW - can't say I was disappointed... Fish again tonight... Yum yum!

For the legality side of things - there was 4 or us on board hence the 12 snapper. Cheers.

Nice work mate. Good haul there

Its good you guys came back in lol.

We went out tuesday wenesday last week too. We got alot of fish but no reds this trip.

The weather got it wrong and lets just say you dont want to be 80ks out the bar at night with 2 stroms.

Makes life interesting even in a big gradey white.

So keen to go back out there again. Hopefully next full moon im out there.

Ps do you guys get snapper in close. We never really caught snapper but we always fish inclose to shelf,

Shane

Snapper were mostly about 15nm from the bar. Have got them as close in as about 4nm, and right up on the edge of the shelf near the Gardner banks.

Know what you mean about the weather... Wish they'd get it right - or at the very least close!
