painting lures

hey guys,

i'm considering painting some hard body lures which haven't been real successful. what paint should i use, was thinking to just by some little jars of model paint or will the smell freak fish out? has anyone tried this with any luck? any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

overall mate the easiest thing to do is use 5min araldite and glitter, gold or silver works for just about anything.

thanks mack, was thinking to do something like that, cool. just another thing, does the added weight alter the swimming action? have you done this sort of thing before?

im pretty sure ive seen paints for lures in tackle stores but not sure what type of paint it is so yeah.....

There is very little weight involved, i regularly touch up old lures that way be it slugs or minnows.

Ferg makes and paints his own lures, not sure exactly what paint he uses, I can ask him if you like?

I do know he airbrushes the paint on.

thanks namyau, i was thinking there might be some special paint but don't really take any notice of that sort of thing when i'm in those sort of places. i just walk in and try to spend as much money as i can in about 15 minutes, or so it seems. hehehe

I've used glittery nail polish. Easy as - comes with it's own brush and lasts forever.

(A bit embarrassing looking for the right colours in the shops though:blush: )

Despite the embarrassment, it does really work well.

The sparkles are already mixed in, it dries quick, the bottles are small and take up next to no room in your tackle....

no worries - if i can have it my way i would spend at least an hr in a tackle shop - even if im not looking for anything in particular - ill end up looking at everything and anything

I'm like that as well. I go in for one lure and spend an hour or two looking at everything.

one thing with araldite it gets really hot when it sets so it might melt some kinds of plastics. but i wouldn't turn to super glue either as it melts some forms of plastic too, but i think it's more of a chemical reaction than heat.

so if your thinking of trying some of the above mentioned suggestions i would try it in a small spot first just in case your lure is made of a palstic that will warp or melt.

the nail polish shouldn't have any problems though except when your in the make-up isle say that your buying it for your wife :laugh:

I paint some of my HB's with clear nail polish to protect the paint.

Theres a special painting Kit that comes with different colours and a little brush. It's especially made for lures/jigheads so I'd be sure that it shouldn't wreck the lure. I'll get the name of it.

i personnally dont think that colour has much to do with it...imo its the action that is more important..but then again...........:laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: .....stranger things have happened.....

I agree. Some Kokoda Sprogs look like Ecogear SX40's in colour and shape, but the swimming action is alot better on the SX40's and they catch fish alot more consistantly.

thanks for the tips guys. i got a few ebay lures that couldn't swim if there lives depended on it, so i'll experiment with those till i come up with the master piece i'm looking for.

Depends what you're chasing I guess. There are plenty who will swear by purple for cod (freshwater) and pink for flatties etc etc.
