Camping on western Fraser

Hey all,

Just got back from a lovely camping trip in Hervey bay. Not much fishing was done but lots of exploring and relaxing instead. I did however manage a sunrise landbased flathead at Wathumba creek which was very satisfying (as well as a yellow tail pike. They taste pretty good you know). Victoria cooked it up for us with some bacon and eggs for brekky on the beach. Definitely was one of the highlights! No pics, but was 42cm at a likely looking spot at incoming tide.

I also was trialling a pulley anchor system to help anchor the boat out further but not needing to swim out to it. The first night at moon point was almost sleepless with worry, but after getting that out of the way I slept better the next night 🙂 definitely a worthwhile system to use if you've never done it! I can share more details if anyone is interested.

I'll leave some pics

Wow.  Looks like an awesome place to visit for a few days.  Great to see you at least had one fish while you were there!

And yes I am definitely interested in more details about the pulley anchor system.  Just yesterday watched a video by Ryan Moody about using two anchors and the benefits of being able to let out/ or pull in the bow anchor if you need to go ashore etc.  Please share details or PM me

Cheers Kat

Thanks Kat!

I'll post a diagram and explanation in a separate thread I think!

Looks like you wouldn't have had to swim for the boat all the time. 😲😂

Great to get away from it/them all. Many other campers ?

I would love to hear how your pulley system works. I know Lance had a setup he showed a bunch of us back in the day but I've lost that to poor memory.

Thanks Brian! About 6 other boats were in the creek.

What did you catch the flattie and pike on? Same lure?

Same lure yeah. I just had a gobblers 3 inch curl tail in "tournament snapper" colour on a 1/8th jig head. Clear water and sunny skies, so a transparent or natural colour is the way to go and on light gear (6lb). Darker colours for dirty waters and lower light.
