Tackle to bring from the USA

Recommended Posts

I'm moving back to Sth. Australia to retire after living in the USA for the last 24 years. I currently live in Florida, one of the most popular places in the country for fishing, and figured before I leave that I might as well snap up some fishing gear to bring back home as it's a fair bit cheaper here, especially on the used market. More than likely I'll buy a place somewhere on Eyre peninsula, so I can see myself doing a fair bit of beach fishing, with some occasional rock or pier fishing thrown in. I've been out of the loop for a while, so other than figuring I need a good 14' to 15' beach rod I'm not sure what to aim for here before I leave. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Mostly you will be chasing mulloway, gummy sharks or snapper in the area....unsure if the Elephants come into that area though.

Typically down that way with the tiny tides compared to the northern half of Aus, beach fishing is a long wait affair. You also tend to lose a lot of good baits to sea lice or sand crabs as well.

Any idea where in SA you are going to be based at?

Largely depends on where I find a house and how long it takes to settle my affairs here in the USA. My first preference is a small country town somewhere on the Eyre peninsula, something that will give me easy access to the coast for fishing and recreation during the day, while leaving me the nights to pursue my other passion, astrophotography - hence the reason I want to live in a small place, well away from the likes of Port Augusta and Port Lincoln - next to no light pollution.

You kind of nailed it with the fish, as I was thinking along the lines of setting up some rods for mulloway, whiting, flathead, etc, as well as some squid. I've been away from SA for 24 years so I'm way out of touch, but I was under the impression bans had been put in place with regard to snapper? They did it here in the USA as well, putting a moratorium in place that wiped out a friend of mine who was a professional fisherman focused exclusively on snapper - he had to move to Louisiana and start all over again fishing the gulf.

Snapper ban is supposed to end in 2025.

Reports from bottom of Yorke Peninsula is that whiting fishers are getting 10 snapper for every whiting.  Small fish now... but HEAPS of them.

I cant wait for the ban to end, they are my favourite target.

Check out the area around Smokey Bay.  Excellent fisjing region, BIG night skies.   30 min drive to  Ceduna
