Rod Rebinding

Hi guys just wondering how you get the excess binding/epoxy off the rod from where the old guides were. I have a couple rods that have 1 broken guide or a broken tip and their just sitting in the shed so i want to repair them so im trying to get the old binding off. So how should i do it?

cut through it very carefully with a very sharp knife

then it will just peel off around the rod

use a Stanley knife blade to remove the bindings then a file to flatten out any larger lumps then use a fine grade wet&dry sandpaper to finish off till smooth.....

Thats what I do but hey I'm no rod builder.....

Its a real bitch to cut through but i will try that and try sanding as well.

ive seen my mate at the tackle shop heat the binding with flame (cig lighter) then carefully attack with sharp blade..it goes soft and goey and comes off easy... but be carefull...!!!!!

Yeah, the lighter is a good way to soften the epoxy. But yeah, don't hold it on for too long:silly: It catches fire and damages the blank

Ok it worked i tried a bit first with the flame and it was alrite so then i tried melting it and it all just fell off and it looks great i dont think i'll worry about sanding it, just going to go buy a few guides now.

ok im heading out to pick up the guides and whatever else tommorow morning, does anyone have any tips and also what else i will need other then the guides, binding string and then epoxy to go over the top?

depending on thread you might need whats called a thread filler or color preserver aswell.

Ok random post. Im no good at rod modifying, and for that reason, i was wondering if its possible to post pics of you progress now and future? Im sure it would be interesting from both a "wow thats it is done" or "wait you could do this instead" kind of analogy

oh and make sure you file the feet of your guides down so there is not a very hefty transition between blank and guide foot while binding

its funny you mention this angus becasue, in a matter of weeks i will be doing a build and i plan to make a tutorial type of thing for the site as a few people have requested info on building rods.

it would be good to have a How to section in the forum and make it a sticky or something, i will also be doing a lure makign one aswell if thats alrigth with you

nop the actually eyelet was just broken as in a semicircle guide so i just removed it and 1 was a bit loose and the other was just missing. I thought i may aswell do them all.

Fishyman where do you buy your rod building gear from? Can you buy like kits for beginners? Pending how this goes i wouldnt mind trying to build my own rod.

mate i but most of the stuff i use from a shop in wooloongabba called mossops fishing tackle, but now i am startign to look into ordering parts online from websites such as mudhole.com and therodworks.com

Fuji make a starter kit type thing which gets you all the parts, contact Frogleys offshore for a catalogue. If you want you could get a wrapper but me personally i just do it in my lap and it works fine.

Yes Mossops will be able to help you out with what you need, Speak to Darryl he is their builder and he can order parts from most companies.

Hey guys i just finished rebinding them and im going to buy some paint tommorow then i will put some sealer/colour preserver on.

is the thread starting on the blank and then climbing onto the foot of the guide? if not you might want to change it a little as this will add extra strength. Also with black thread you will not need CP as black cant get any darker

I mean to seal it. And i cant remember which way we did it im pretty sure we started on the guide and worked off.

O and i used a cordless drill with a hole saw covered in electrical tape to spin the rod whislt binding and it worked great.
