i'm no ecologist but the freshwater run off from the river is so low at the moment that it's really very salty all the way up to the weir. i think that a lot of saltwater fish are right up in the reaches that are usually dominated by fresh. before wivenhoe was built there would have been a lot more fresh water running off and the drought isn't helping. they say when there is a drought it's seven times worse in the sea...

you're right there roobs, most of the time colledges is fresh but due to the restricted flow caused by the drought the tides are pushing all the way up there. on the full moon the tide was flowing up stream under the bridge and at high tide the water was at least a foot deeper than it usually is . the fish would deffinately follow it up stay and addapt to the fresher conditions.
