fish in unusual places

Alex caught this little yellow fin bream in the fresh above colleges crossing during the Classic.

Feral there are stacks of small bream in the area, which I try and carefully release while cast netting. I was surprised to start getting Winter Whiting in the net lately, but more so when I netted a toadfish last weekend at The Junction! What next?

There a lots of breambos there but like werewolf said they are all small. There are some legals there but they are super finicky. Aparently (from angus) there are also flatties there.

in 2001 i caught a 28cm flathead at colleges crossing which was a real shock but i havent been back since.

i'm no ecologist but the freshwater run off from the river is so low at the moment that it's really very salty all the way up to the weir. i think that a lot of saltwater fish are right up in the reaches that are usually dominated by fresh. before wivenhoe was built there would have been a lot more fresh water running off and the drought isn't helping. they say when there is a drought it's seven times worse in the sea...

you're right there roobs, most of the time colledges is fresh but due to the restricted flow caused by the drought the tides are pushing all the way up there. on the full moon the tide was flowing up stream under the bridge and at high tide the water was at least a foot deeper than it usually is . the fish would deffinately follow it up stay and addapt to the fresher conditions.

Last time we fished Kookaburra Park, (which wasnt to long ago) we caught several Flathead and stacks of winter whiting in the cast net. In fact the whiting were the most prolific bait.

A good sign??

Yeah, the water is definatly more salty then it was pre-drought up near the weir. Infact my friend caught a giant herring near the colleges pipes and when we lure fish near the old weir there are so many tarpon there

hanger where are these pipes and the \"old wier\" you mention i've only fished colledges from the park and kooka park down at the wide bend downstream from the boatramp but i'd like to try some other spots around the area

the pipes i think are the pipes next to the bridge but it is a construction site at the moment with the water highway business the old weir is somewhere around the new weir at mt crosby vague i know but i havent been myself
