spiral wrap rods

I was in the tackleworld at underwood when i came accross a rod that looked like the guides were broken. But to my suprise the guides were actually wrapped around the rod for a purpose. I asked the guy and he said it was to reduce weight (less guides) and to reduce the load when a big fish is on.

I would like to know if anyone has ever used these rods and if so are there any disadvantages to using one.

The ones I've seen were Loomis top end stuff.

First off i couldnt afford any loomis rods, but the ones i saw were the starlo stix tournament pro rods, they were $160 i think and looked ok for that price.
