queensland Fraser Island June 2009

Have recently returned from 2 weeks on Fraser Island, stayed on the beach at Waddy Point, for our annual family holiday. We were there with 3 other families as well as 3 boats.

The fishing was a bit quiet this year, so there is not much to report. Some of the highlights were a spangled emperor (pic), jew approx 80-85cm, spanner crabs and a big grassy sweetlip.

We spent a fair amount of fishing time in the swamp/marsh that was in front of the campsites at waddy. Here we pulled a good number of small fish (Tarpon, GT, Whiting and Trevally) on bubble pop 35’s and sx40’s. At one stage we dropped my tinny in and cast from it while drifting on the leccy. This was by far our most successful session.

Sound and looks like a great trip. Spent a recent long weekend in the same spot @ Waddy, but didn't think to fish the flamin' marsh. We had no luck at all in the surf, so would have been better off fishing almost from the campsite in that area.

We probably would have ignored the marsh too if we hadn't been told by a good source that there is some small barra in there among the mullet. Had no idea that we would find all the other species though.
