Humane fish kill

What is the best way to humanely kill any fish that you wish to take home.

I have tried bleeding them. ( messy and takes time)

Ice slurry still takes time and not very practical fish spikes also puncture beer cans.

I know that some guides spike the fish in the head for an instant kill but where is the correct spot for each species.

I usually just chuck them in the esky but I am certain there is a better way.

Hi Ray, when working on the pro boats, we use to SPIKE all fish on the top of their skull. Just above the the gills.Aprentally this goes straight into the brain and nervous system. then drop them into ice slurry.

This kept them in prime condition for market.

Mate I just gill them with a sharp big knife. Kills em quick and keeps the flesh soft.

ray if you google fish spiking you'll find all the instructions to do it properly. fish spiking(ike jimmi)is the traditional japanese way to kill fish ,but the old english method of a priest(hardwood club or a stone),to the head allways works for me, this method is approved by the humane society.

Well if Ray is worried mixing his dead fish and tinnie will end up with spike holes in his tinnies, he should drink stubbies!

But I reckon I would be more worried about all the fish blood and slime on the brew in whatever type of container! Lovely first mouthful!

Rinse the tinny/stubby over the side and wipe it on your shirt. Its quite hygenic.

Must admit when I dispatched the large catfish I caught in my cast net this morning I felt quite viscious and didnt even try to untangle it.

I have an old cricket bat that a mate split. So i cut it off bout 1/2 way up bout 2 inches above the split. WHACK!!!! Does the job every time. :whistle:

I prefer to cut their throats to bleed them, and then bend their head back until you hear a \"pop\". Gruesom, but kills them instantly and bleeds them at the same time. Isn't the best way if your want to take a photo afterwards tho.
