Are fish caught in the brisbane river safe to eat?

Does it depend on the part of the river and the species?

It hasen't done me any harm yet - well not that I admit to - I make my call on where I catch them, what sort of fish and what that fish would be eating. I don't eat catfish, however, I would eat the smaller younger fish before I ate the older river dewellers. Thread fins, bream, flatties, squire, small sharks, tailor are all good by my thinking. If the fish are nomatic I judge they are good for eating. Your call.

By all reports the river is way better now compared to a few years back. I m unaware of any current warnings.

Have you tried MCDonalds - it is good for you now they have the heart tick of approval.

I am with Brian on the nomadic fish thought.

Fish like Threadfin and Squire are moving in and out of the river all the time, so if you would eat one from the bay, you should have no problem eating one from the river. Same fish!

Cod - me eat - no - cause I think they should go back - but more importantly they tend to find a hole and live there. I think they would be OK but I wouldn't.

i ate a couple of mud crabs out of the fig tree pocket stretch of the river, sure i glow in the dark a little bit now and some of my hair fell out but otherwise I feel ok...ish..

40 odd years ago used to fish luggage point and sunken wall and used to catch a hundred or so bream. Never used to eat them but gave them to neighbours. I think they are still alive but i dont live there anymore. Last time i saw them they were old and wrinkled maybe that is from the fish. I think handleing them has also affected me i am also looking old but am too fat to have any wrinkles.

I would say your pretty fine to eat anything from any where in the river. the one exception though, would be anything from/in/near oxley creek. Apparetnly its the most polluted creek in Australia.

Well, I have eaten heaps of prawns from the pontoon at the mouth of Oxley Creek and I'm still fine. And my brother and dad and a couple of friends all have eaten shark from that same point of Oxley Creek and their still ok.
