Reel big problem

Hey guys,

I was fishing in the dark last friday night and managed to take the spool off my small Abu reel. Im having trouble getting it back on. I figured all I would have to do is put it back on and wind the top drag adjuster to tighten it. I was wrong...

Its not a thread problem as when the spool isnt there it tightens fine. Ive never really taken reels apart before so dont know much. Any suggestions or advise as to what im doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.

So is it an overhead reel?

The soulution is probably very simple, but id need to see it.

Anyway of photographing it so we can see the prob. And more importantly what wont go where?

Assuming it is a spinning reel (thats what it sounds like you are describing) is there a star washer sitting on the shaft out from the nut that holds the bail assembly in place?

Yeah, sorry its a spinning reel. And yes there is the star washer...

I will try get a photo. Basically imagine trying to tighten the drag and it not gripping on the thread.

Without seeing it but knowing about my brother having a similar problem, Id say the internal thread has been stripped. If its plastic then Im 99% certain thats the problem.

cheers for the suggestions...

The thread is metal. I took apart the drag adjuster knob (on top) and the thread in it is similar to a small nut and is also metal. I might try a small bit of thread tape to see if it works. If not I might get some photos to see if theres anything else im missing.

What brand of reel ?

Check the nut on the drag knob is still secure in its housing, it may be broken and not getting a chance to grab the external thread on the top of the main shaft.

Yep I just read it again Abu Garcia - sorry mate.

It will be a brass nut inside the drag knob, I still think the thread will be stripped or the circular nut will be loose in the housing.

Double post - sorry about that.

A light squirt of machine oil will usually stop this problem from occurring although it needs to be done regularly from when the reel is new. Corrosion is the biggest enemy of all reels.
