Any Tips on Garfish ?

So here I am in the creek breaking up bread for the Gar and they are loving it - However if one of those pieces of bread is on my tiny size 12 hook they dont want to know about it .. I was using 10lb fluro carbon leader too.. What am I doing wrong I ask ?

Your leader is way too heavy... maybe 2 to 4lb.... Berley up with breadcrumbs mixed with your oil you cook your fish in and use a No.12 hook and a small float and use a tiny piece of prawn. Dont strike either use a ultra light whippy rod and just lift once the flots shows a bite.

Thanks Bi Polar.. But you say oil I cook my fish with ?? You mean regular cooking oil ? Or left over cooking oil that was used to cook fish ?

The left over oil you cook your fish in... You dont need much.

Just enough to make it float on the water and give it a bit of a fishy smell.

And its really important not to strike hard

Ok cheers.. I went and got some 4lb fluro carbon.. It was the lightest they had. I will let you know how I go

Make sure the only bread they have to eat is the stuff with a hook in it. When burleying bread dont throw in pieces, put it in a bucket of water and churn the hell out of it until the bread is pretty much dissolved in the water. They will be more likely to take your suss looking bread bits if there is no better offer.

make sure your not burleying too many bits of solid bread, make sure that the burley is just to attract the fish, then the bit of bread on your hook is the one that a gar has to take.

I am from Adelaide initially and Gents (Maggots) were the hot bait for Gar but seems not used up here in QLD is that correct?
