Super trawler Company Charged Over Fish Waste

SEAFISH Tasmania, the commercial fishing company which failed in its bid to bring super trawlers into Australian waters, has been charged with breaching state environmental laws.

It is understood the charges relate to the alleged disposal of fish waste at the company's Triabunna plant.

The company had previously been investigated by Tasmania's Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in 2012 and 2013, the ABC reports.

The investigation was prompted after dozens of residents at Triabunna, Louisville Point and Orford complained about a strong fish smell.

In December 2012 the EPA said steps taken by Seafish to deal with the problem had had little effect.

A year later residents were still complaining about odour problems.

The EPA has not confirmed it has laid charges against Seafish Tasmania, but the ABC understands the company was notified of the charges late last month.

It is understood Seafish Tasmania is continuing to operate at Triabunna.
