Trailer Winch Work

No fishing for me for a few days, have to replace winch rope, will use spectra.

First I'll need to clean the rust off the spindle and also have to find a way to pack the reel as 5 meters of 6 mm spectra only half fills it.

Any suggestions how to do the packing?

with spool half filled the winch will be lower geared andboat easier to winch up. Conversely it will also be slower.

It's already a 5 to 1 gearing so plenty of grunt for my 4 m tinny.

The problem with 10 meters is I don't think that the inner loops would ever dry out!!

why does it have to be full???? I would just put what I need on it and your done....  your winch rope should only be about a meter longer than your trailer with a couple of turns on the drum

A fuller drum will make retrieving the boat faster.

Maybe I'll just get a powered winch!!

I'm seeing more and more powered winches at the boat ramps. I don't know if it just the cheap ones I'm seeing, but man! are the they noisy and slow.

Cut a bit of 80nb pipe the same width as winch drum,then cut pipe in half position pipe halves over winch drum and weld on.works a charm

Fill it with 8mm silver first. or some strapping? Do you have fids? Happy to lend some
