Boat License

Hi all,

my mate just bought a Savage 4.2m runabout wtih 50 Hp Merc on it but he doesn't have a license. Any suggestions on the best/easiest way for him to get one?

He lives at Wooloongabba.

You have to sit a theory thing then go do a practical test and its about $150 and lasts 2-3hrs. O and did i mention its damn near impossible not to pass. Archies or ABC Boating School are 2 i can think of atm.

archies does an allday saturday course at morningside for the theory then you walk down the road a little to colmslie ramp for the prac. all pretty painless.

2-3 hours you say? When I went to Archies it was a day thing. Tea,Coffee and snacks provided. And you drive his boat for a little while. I thought it was a very good course and recomend Archies.

Really wow that might just be archies because i know my brother did one up at Caloundra and his was maybe 4hrs max but more like 3 i think.

looks like I'll tell him Archies is the go. (Are they in the phone book?) He's gonna be taking his kids out so he wants something a little informative I think. Nice n handy anyway!

There are 2 ways of doing it.

Pay small amount sit test and then prac.

All day course, where they teach you instead of you having to read the book. Then the prac. THis usually includes ,orning tea and lunch.

Go to Archies or similar do the 1 or 2 day course and you will learn alot more, like coming into dock against current, navigation marks, what the flags and symbols on large vessels mean(like whether they are underway, trawling, anchored),2-way radio ettiquette etc. There is much to know and getting a boat licence should be harder to obtain then a car license.

Not hard to pick who got their licence witch way when you are on the water or if they even bothered to get one.

I did mine last saturday cost$150

ABC at Jacobs well marina,it was an allday course,very informative fully recomend them.
