When @tugger and I were offshore a couple of weeks ago, we were talking about hitting the Logan River to hunt down some elbow slapping whiting. Yesterday the tides and Mark’s shifts lined up so we decided to have a crack. I have only fished the Logan once before, and Mark hadn’t been there for years but did have some recent marks from his son. Mark organised some bloodworms and I provided the tinny and a yabbie pump.

We met up at the private boat ramp at Carbrook. It is a really nice facility and the guy running it is very helpful. He gave us a few clues about where we might find a few whiting, then off we went. As we were loading Mark’s gear into the boat he was telling me how he was was going to brain the whiting with his Black Queen and his Black Knight. What’s this? You have to beat the fish in the Logan at chess to take home a feed? Of, course, he was just referring to his secret weapons, the vintage whiting rods that have served him and many others for decades. They are soft slow taper rods about 8ft long matched with small spinning reels with light nylon line, a long trace and a longshank hook. 

We fished the last of the outgoing tide with not a lot of action. When the yabbie banks became exposed we easily pumped enough to keep us going through the afternoon. The action would not be described as frenetic, but we did assemble a feed. We kept a feed of 5 whiting in the 30 to 33cm range and 4 bream about the same size. There were lots of smaller bream and a few smaller whiting, but we were hunting the elbow slappers. 

So we may not have completely achieved our goal, but we did work out a few spots and techniques to try next time. Overall it was a great day and I will definitely be trying that area again soon. Mrs Scaley must enjoy lots of fish dinners. You have been prolific lately. Well done. 

She is always happy when I come home for a feed. Luckily for me @tugger has a freezer full of quality reef fish from recent trips so left me with the catch of tasty bread and butters yesterday. Weather looks good tomorrow. Might have to have another go somewhere.

I need a mate with a freezer full of fish so I can take something home to the missus occasionally too.

Mrs ellicat doesn't even ask if I've caught fish anymore. She just asks if I had a nice day. lol Even when I do catch fish I usually let my companion take them home as I'm usually too lazy to fillet and cook them. Some days I do though.

Certainly beats 4 walls though.

I appreciate the effort you have gone to to create this art piece Steve - it must have taken quite an effort to get the macabre lighting just right and I really like the random pattern of fish with some upright and others upside down. You are really honing your craft well ......... 😉🙃😁

Nice work on the fish - always good to get to know a different location. Didn't drop any pots?

The fish didn’t have a chance. They didn't even know which way was up.

No pots this time Kelvin, but we did take note of where the pro pots were for next time.

I had to go to the lease to pick up some oysters. 

I towed lures for about 4 hours for 1 bonny...

But I did catch an octopus at the lease so eating well tomorrow night. 

Put a few lazy hours in at the port for a couple of small bites and no fish. I saw your message about the lease when I got home, which was too late. Sure was a busy day at the ramp for a Thursday.  Octopus hey? Yum!

Yep it was living in one of the pipes. I knew it was there because there was a midden of shells and dead crabs out the front 🙂
