Decided to go for a fish tonight after having no success in the day with lures just a hit . Anyway I start walking down to the spot see a few people fishing in almost full darkness I decided to go on the bank as the bridge is way to shallow for fishing . I set up with my phone light and decided to use bread as I don’t have any fish baits garfish sardines etc . I rigged up a small sinker and a suicide hook what I would use for fish baits but because i didn’t know what was in the river and where drop offs and holes were I need a bit of weight to get a good cast anyway I casted near the bridge just on the edge where the shallow water stops flowing and drops to deeper water I sit my rod in some thick grass as I organise my stuff a bit better but before I can even do that my rod almost goes flying in the sand luckily I picked it up before that happend and landed a little 25cm bream I put him back and cast in the same spot and not long after I got bigger bream 28cm after that the fish started to steal my bait it was a bit tricky to fish because it was dark and couldn’t see my line . Usually I let fish run with the bread for 10 seconds or so anyway I go to bring in my bait and a bream sucks the bait as I’m about to bring it in and another nice bream landed 28cm . After that I decided to leave because my mother texting me come back . Overall A decent session for a hour could have got a feed if I wanted to but decided to release them all. Sort of reminded of fishing at home for bream but instead of a unweighted light setup I used heavier gear and a sinker still was fun regardless even a 28cm bream can do a few good headshakes on 10lb

Gear . I usually don’t fish this heavy for bream but I didn’t know what fish were in the river and also my size 8 mustad hooks I  usually use off jetties wharfs breakwalls and some sand flats but because I had heavier gear I used a bigger hook and also a sinker which I rarely use even with Philchards I don’t use sinkers like ever but tonight I kind of had to 

Rod daiwa aird x 2-4kg

Reel daiwa aird lt 2000

10lb braid

6lb mono leader . It’s thicker them most 6lb mono it’s more like 10lb leader

Oh and also the river is safe to stick my hand in the water with a live fish in it people were swimming there . There was a sign saying report if you see crocs so they must not be common down there

Where abouts on the river are you fishing, near Gladstone or further inland ?

My old stomping grounds, don’t be fooled there are crocs in that stretch of the river, I’ve seen em there. 

Try and get some live baits and fish for jacks and Barra, I’ve caught lots from the old bridge. Also try getting around to the rocks near the main road bridge, good grunter, jacks and Barra all threw there.

Yeah what James said, I was down there in 2012/13 carting roadbase for that gas project.

We were camped on the upstream/ north side near the main road bridge at that transport yard

and the donga's were overlooking the river and you could see people pulling in some really good fish

at the rock bar. And yeah there's crocs there. Every arvo we'd sit on the back lawn with a coldie or 6 and watch them fishing,

Yeah I might see if can catch some Grunter today I might try smaller lures today .yesterday I had a 3 inch prawn and I only got one hit I might try my 2.5 inch baitjunkie . i don’t really have a good reel that I can use for live baiting everyone there has daiwa BG reels and a few had some penn reels to for live baiting .and yeah there’s no way I’d be swimming in there I was just confident enough to put my hand in the water as heaps of people were around and there haven’t been any signs of crocs near the bank . Although usually crocs are more active at night but yeah I think people are a bit crazy swimming in there

A little hint mate, the best grunter fishing I’ve had there was using cat fish fillets for bait. I know sounds weird but try it
