Righto I'll bite - exactly why would I pay nearly $300 for this rod holder? Says it electric, but not what it actually does?

I think they are refering to it as holding electric reels 'which are too heavy to hold'

But $300 looks to be way over the odds, what was wrong with the old alvey deck winches to skull drag stuff off the bottom?

Dunno, I guess its just a motorised 'lazy arm', strap the rod in and all you do is work the reel (and hope the bit of boat you've got it clamped to doesnt snap off into the water). I reckon you could knock up a manual free turning one (ball bearing gooseneck of a pushbike)for about $20 that'll work the same way...if you wanted to be real tricky you could add a piece of suspension/spring to give it a bit more play. For $300 bucks...tell him he's dreamin'.
