Well now that I have entered the Tilapia cull at lake kurwongbah.

The next question is what do I need in the way of fishing gear ie: hook size, line and bait etc etc?

I have never fished for them before so go ezy on me, I'm a Tilapia virgin....:blush:

Your bream bass stuff are good. No weight required, even a floating leader is good. If you have them, set up 2 or 3 rods and you'll find that it keeps you pretty busy and heaps of fun.

However if you want to take a chair and a fishing mag then just use 1 rod so you get to relax.

THey (Tilapa) fight like bream.

Malcolm, i found this is the AFO Photo Gallery. This is a very clear photo. Sometimes they have more red on them this.

People are often surprised to find they are not an unnatractive fish. But remember they were originally an aquarium species.

Ive never caught a tilapia myself only carp, just one quick slightly offtopic question, in the albert and logan floods, did any1 else see the 15kg carp that guy caught on the news?

Worms are as good as anything, shrimp goes well (seems a waste of shrimp though) when they get on the bite they will go most things, bits of meat,dough etc.

Yes, I agree, matey. They eat anything. However, they seem to love garden worms more than anything else. I remember when I was still overseas when they would feast on bread, etc. Prawns are more quickly consumed by turtles rather than by Tilapia.

By the way, I am extremely new to fishing. I've just started a couple of weeks ago and loving it. If only I could catch more fish........

The red on the fins of the tilapia means they are older males and they are usualy darker then the females and the females are just brown.

Bear in mind they're mouth brooders, and can have anywhere up to 1200 eggs I think it is

the guy at kurwongbah the other day told me in one season from one tillapia you can get up to 30,000 young this would have to be in perfect conditions but it puts the overpopulated bull shark to shame at 4 per year
