Wouldn'd go using lip grippers unless you want the eel to knot up the grippers and onto your hand, covering both in slime.

But have fun, I used to catch them as a kid in Emerald. They can be eaten, you can find recipe's off the net.

As angus said - heavy line is good.

That's why I use 60 and 100lbs handlines..
