Surf fishing near Brisbane?

Hi Folks

Only around 4 months before I move from sunny Scotland to Brisbane so getting a bit excited now.

As much as the fishing on the river looks good, the one thing ive always loved when visiting down under is the surf fishing.

Had an amazing time in NZ surf fishing for snapper and Kaiwa, I was wondering what the situation was like around Brissy?

Ive got one eye on locating around Brighton area of Brisbane so that weve got easy access to the coast.

Whats the surf fishing like around there? I understand you can catch Flathead but what else would I be liable to catch?

Anyway hope you are all well and happy fishing! :)

Cheers

Jamie

best surf fishing around is up or down the coast, staddie or moreton. around brisbane, there is not real surf so beach fishing is not really beach fishing. around the gold coast, the gutters hold bream, flathead, whiting, dart and the odd tailor, up the sunshine coast very similar. no snapper or kaiwa (whatever they are) off the beach close to bris unfortunately...

There are some great surf fishing spots around brizzy. Bribie island is a favourite spot of mine, we also have access to some fantastic islands like Fraser, Moreton and Stradbroke. All these areas almost guarantee you small fish like Dart, Bream, Whiting, Flathead which can be great fun, but there is always a chance of some bigger stuff like Taylor, Mackerel or tuna.

having a 4x4 (or a mate with one) is a real advantage with surf fishing but there are also plenty of spots you can fish without it. Im not really an expert but would be keen to have you along on a trip when you get here.

Mate Beach fishing on both the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast can be awesome at times species you can catch include.

The mighty mulloway which is the largest fish you will catch from the beach, growing to some enormous sizes. they can be caught on both live and dead baits.

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/mulloway_01.jpg

The Tailor is an old favourite, growing to 20lbs but mostly caught in the 2-6lb range they can be caught on whole pilchards or by spinning with metal slices

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/tailor.jpg

Dart the main stay all year round grow to 2kgs but mostly caught around 500 grams, they are hard fighters and can be caught on pippies worms or artificials

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/dart.jpg

Whiting are a dellicous fish on the table and can be caught all year round but more prolific in the hotter months. best bait form the beach is no dought beach worms. they grow to 1kg bu mostly caught around 3-500 grams

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/whiting3.jpg

Snub nosed Dart, very similar to the american Permit are mostly caught north on the sunshine coast upwards. they are great fighters and grow quite large. best bait is pippies

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/dartsn.jpg

The yellowfin bream is a main stay for a lot of anglers from the estuarys to beach and ocean rocks, growing to 2kgs but mostly caught between 300g -1kg, they are good fighters on light gear. Baits vary depending on location but form the beach pippies and worms do best in my experience.

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/yellowfin-bream.jpg

Tarwhine are a similar fish to bream in looks but can be destinguished by lines running horizontal to the lateral line and a more rounded head, they also have a black gut lining. they grow bigger than bream, up to 5kgs. same baits work with tarwine. they however IMO fight harder than bream

[img size=499]http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb161/pcsolutionman/Tarwhine.jpg

Flathead- growing to 10kg+ but mostly caught between 1-3kgs flathead are tenacious feeders and will hit most baits and almost any artificial. they are also a great table fish.

This should cover most species you are likely to encounter from our ocean beaches.

Thanks lads looks brilliant!!

Lived in Oz for a year before back in 2001, was over in WA and NT.

Biggest fish I caught was a 20kg Wahoo off Coral Bay, althought it swam towards the boat really quick where it was gaffed, over before I even knew about it. :(

Other species caught was a 10kg Giant Travell in Coral Bay as well as losing a ray that felt like a caravan from the beach!

Caught a few Mulloway off the jetty in Carnarvon buy nowhere near the size of that beast in the pic, awesome fish mate!

By and far the best fish ive ever caught was in NT and it has to be the Barra. Man youse are lucky to have access to fishing for such a special fish!

It was about 6kg, not the biggest by any stretch, but wow, what a fight!! Im sure plenty of you guys will have experienced that!

Woody - thanks for your kind invitation i will most def take you up on that!

Will will keep posting until I go but once im there I'll be biting the hands off anyone who is kind enough to show me the ropes!!

Take care lads

Thanks lads looking forward to meeting a few of you when I get there.

Sorry Lee, meant to say cheers for going to the trouble in your post found it very informative. I have being doing a bit of reserach on some of the fish you posted for myself they look awesome!

Much appreciated mate.

I'll tell you what im not half dying to try eating a flattie and a whiting after what ive seen on Rex Hunt and what ive read on here.

Is it difficult to catch a whiting of table size? Or is the size limit a bit smaller?

Anyway, tight lines

Cheers

Jamie

Have a look at bribie Is surf beach,, the best spots, you nead a 4x4 to get to..

Bribie (surf side) has a couple spots that has coffee rock exposed on/ or just of the beach.. 1 of these spots is up near the old search light bunker.. This were you can pick up some small snapper ( to 48cm).. There are not big numbers and are not there all the time but friends of mine do target them and get there 5 fish...

Also you can spin for Lt tuna, winter time being the best time for them.. :)

Spinning for tuna!!! Thats amazing, I take it the ltl means smaller variety?

Seen guys catch Tuna off the Jetty in Carnarvon. All i had was a 5 foot rod from waitros and a dead octupus as bait, broke my heart not being able to catch any, there were tons of them as well.

Still gave it a shot though! :P

I take it you can get pretty good offshore charters off brissy or surrounding area? I mind in Coral Bay the 1st charter I went on tried to hit with one of this hand reel things nailed to the side of the boat! :(

Now way I said, but they were kind enough to oblige me with a rod. B)

Hey mate, I would be heading north of brissy for surf fishing, I live in brighton and it is very very average to say the least, odd tailor around august and maybe a few whiting but more stingrays then anything, redcliffe beaches can produce a few good flatties and bream on plastics, hardbodies and bait, but from sunshine coast and north its pretty amazing, i spent the easter weekend at inskip point near rainbow beach and one morning with a mate using ecogear vx35's we caught dart every cast for half an hour or so, my mate was also spooled by a longtail tuna on his sol 2000 and loomis dsr820s, hope your lucky enough to land the longtail with 200 yards of 4 pound braid hanging out of his gob

Mate coming from Scotland it would be amazing to catch a stingray, beleive me.

I would definately be up for organising or getting involved in trips once I arrive which will be the middle of July now as weve moved it forward again.

uNtil then happy fishing!
