Lenthalls February anyone interested?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I am thinking I would like to get another extended fresh water dam trip in before the end of summer. Lenthalls has both bass and Barra, and allows small petrol engines (although it is small enough for electrics). It is 290k north of brisbane, so an easy 4 hour drive with boat in tow.

I have not set a date or anything yet, but I reckon something like 4 or 5 days (or even a week) in February might be the go.

Anyone else interested? (Might be a good un for your new boat Brian!)

Have not been to Lenthalls before, but looking at photo's it seems to have similar weed beds to Baroon, those floating lillies are definately my favourite!

Im interested and have replied to your email.

I will most likely only be bale to do a 2 day weekender. However for a four hour drive i think its worth it. Ill take my Kayak if i can do it. Just let me me know the dates.

Ill start filling out an undated marital leave pass now :)

I just did some further reading on the dam and it is also stocked with Silver and Golden Perch. Reported captures of Saratoga have also been made. Sounds like my kind of dam :)

in one of the fishing dvd's um number 5 i think starlo catches a saratoga and some other person gets a barra and saratoga...and there seems to be quite alot of big bass there...

I'll catch up with Ferg on the weekend sometime, then set the dates that suite, Ray is thinking about it, but he has to be home for the 26th, and Ferg for the 7th, so probably in between - spanning the weekend of the 17/18th.

Ash if your petrol is to big, we can probably arrange an electric and batteries between us to lend you.

Mate, if i can go and we could organise that, it'd be much appreciated! Its only 6hp, but i would prefer to use electric.

Saratoga, barra, big bass and the perches? All it needs is some spangled perch and Terry would be there for sure!

The electric should be ok. We will have to do some research on where to camp because if using electric you will have to recharge.I know wongi waterholes is unpowered and dont know if generators are allowed. I have a 2kva and a smaller .75kva they both will run battery chargers but you probably will need 8 hours to recharge.

Brian,

Dam is reasonable small in capacity, but is shallow, and has long arms!

Electric will be more than adequate, particulary if some run petrols, can tow you around a bit (IE if we know fish are up one arm, we could tow you up there to same time and battery).

I also own a 6hp Johnson Brian, fell off the back of a truck, dont even know if it runs, its stuck in Rays shed awaiting his practiced eye! So if lucky could have to motors there.

I figure if Ray comes ,he will probably come in the Silver Bullet, as it is a bit more comfy than his freshwater boat (and as you say, I have his motor!) Ferg will be coming, so we need the room anyway.

I am trying to find closet cabins available at the moment, looks like it will be either Hervey Bay or Maryborough, both about 30k away.

There is bush camping 15k away, but we need access to power to charge electrics etc, and for Ray to refrigerate all the fish we are going to catch.:woohoo: Also for 15k I'd prefer the comfort. Some of the other blokes (the young and hardy) might prefer the bush camp. It has showers and toilets and looks nice.

For those interested in more info about Lenthalls, sweetwater has a good page.

OK Ray has ferreted out that there is a little van park with 2 cabins at Howard. I will ring them tomorrow and see about the availability of the 2 cabins from 15th to 19/20th February.

I reckon at this stage we have the following going

Ferg

Ray

Alex

Myself

Brian

even if no others confirm 2 cabins would be more comfortable for that many. If more come along than the cabins can hold, powered camp sites are probably the go (I know several of us have tents and camping gear, we can all socialise at the cabins!)

Got onto Barrum River caravan park, its the closest joint, in Howard. They have 2 cabins, but they have one permenantly let to some bloke who is building houses locally.

So that only leaves 1 cabin, which sleeps three, (1 double bed, 2 singles) plenty of powered camping sites though. $55 basic for the cabin (covers 2 people) then $6 for each extra person.

What do people think? keep looking or some camp in powered sites? (After Awoonga, I'd reckon it would be easier, and more fun if we are all in the same spot)

Graham Pflaum wants to come. We will use his 4hp two stroke on my dam boat. He has an oz 30 second tent that he and I can stay in. Also will be bringing 2 engels.Maybe we can make do with the cabin and a couple of tents.Other alternatives are a fair way away, Opinions please.

Guys - Thanks heaps for the offer about working bee - I'll do a job list and see where I am at.

AS to accomadation - I can mahe a bed in my car but I realy love Hot coffee and cold beer. Also I will need power for charging boat batterries. Other then that I am easy.

I have to try and keep budget down due to cost of reno of boat.

For those interested, Lenthalls is roughly the same surface area as Baroon, but does not have a big open bay, runs more up the arms of the feeder water courses.

So as you can see electrics and Yaks should have no problems.

I am also adding it as an event to the calendar.

well I have booked the cabin and the powered site next to it at Barrum River caravan park arriving 15/2/07 leaving 20/2/07.

Will be Ferg and I in the cabin, probably with Brian, Ray and Graham camping on the powered site. Anyone else wants to camp they have plenty of powered sites left. Might be able to scrounge a tend if you dont have one.

Contact details for accomodation are

Barrum River Caravan park ph 4129 4859

Bonnie is the person whom normally answers the phone, I have booked under \"Andrew Kennedy\", so if you tell Bonnie you are with my party, she will put you as close as possible.

The Van Park backs onto the Barrum river, Ray says they have a small jetty, but cant remember if they have a ramp. So there is a chance of some livies, and if we cant get onto lenthalls at night, and want to fish some more, going fishing in the river at night.

Gunna be a great trip!

I might have to buy a little 4/6 hp

Sent you a couple off Ebay. There is also another one same as mine, but as a 1977 model, I am keeping an eye on it for parts, I figure you dont need something that old! THere is another suzuki which is $500 \"buy it now\" have sent that one to Ray for a rough idea of age, also looks old.

Also I dont snore, I gently hum during my repose, it fools the mosquito's.

My 6hp is at Fergs, has spark, turns over, might be a goer. If it is, I'll take it to lenthalls and you can borrow it (I think I read your new boat is registered?) Might need to fit a new prop beforehand though, just noticed a sizeable piece is missing off one blade.

Angus - I will be setting up a 6 man tent, but it realy only good for 2 because of all the crap us fisherman pack.

You can either put your swag in there or Feral has a spare bunk. So I wouldn't book another site just yet.

If I go up on the Thursday - put the tent up - then all you gotta do is turn up Fri Night after work and you can leave Sunday arvo and be back for work. Don't mean to organize you - but that sort of option is available to you or variation off and every other AFO member.

By the way I will not be packing any luxuries, just the bare essintials.
