Boat License Question

A guy at work said he'll be bringin his boat out this w/end with his new 9.9hp on his tinny - I dont think he has a license - wats the fine etc? and will he have to get his boat towed back in?!?

In NSW ya don't need a license if ya boat dosen't go any faster than 10 knots!!

Im pretty sure qld = above 6hp

Yeah, Aslong as you dont drive it you will be fine though, I think its $150-$300 fine if you dont have a licence.

if he has no licenceand gets caught, yep he will get a fine, not sure how much, i for 1 hope it's a lot, and he will prob have to paddle back to the ramp under escort, just way easier to get a boat licence.

In QLD

Registration is applicable for all boats with a motor OVER 4hp. Licence is required to operate a boat with a motor OVER 6hp.

In NSW

Registration is applicable for all boats any mechanically propelled vessel which is capable of 10 knots or more. Licence is required to operate a boat at more than 10knots.

There are some extra catergories/exemptions but thats basically the crux of it. And hence the 9.9hp motors in NSW

how does the 9.9hp engine work with NSW laws? 1hp = 1knot as a guide? confusing!

sorry, i thought it was above 4 hp for rego and licence, this is how you get when you are legal, as long as you have a licence, and use some common sence on the water, you pretty much don't worry about to much, the last time i answered q's like this was in 1991. a lot of water under the bridge since then.

How often you's get license checks?

I've never been stopped but until recently only ever travelled in Pine river and Nudgee creek.

Hell I never even seen a police boat

when launching the boat, and retrieving the boat, by land based cops, been checked for a licence and safety gear a few times on the river both day and night at the strangest hours, they have checked me and not worried about the guy beside me at all, so it would be best if your mate got a licence, as he will be checked with christmas getting close, there will be a blitz going on thats for sure...
