DAF assesses the stock status of important Queensland fish species each year. These assessments follow a weight-of-evidence approach where an expert panel determines the status of each stock. Species may have single or multiple stocks found wholly within Queensland while others may extend into other states waters. Each of these species is assessed at the stock level however DAF assesses only the Queensland component of these stocks.

In 2014, Queensland adopted the Status of Key Australian Fish Stocks  (SAFS) assessment framework. http://fish.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx

The SAFS reports assess the biological sustainability of key wild-caught fish stock in Australia against a nationally agreed stock status classification framework and using a nationally agreed reporting template. Adopting the SAFS framework ensures Queensland assessments meet national standards and helps improve community confidence in our stock status findings.

The national SAFS assessments are conducted every other year and look at a list of species agreed to by all participating jurisdictions. In non-SAFS years, DAF assesses the status of other important Queensland species not considered in the SAFS reports. Any Queensland species with sustainability concerns are assessed every year to ensure these species are closely monitored.

Stock status determinations help guide DAF in decisions about fisheries management and research.
