queensland That time of year again!!

Well it’s that time of year to dust off the top pockets and have a throw. Went for my first two sessions for the year over the past two weeks and did quite well. Both sessions saw me and a mate get two buckets of prawns per session in under two hours. All of the prawns were of a good size too aswell as a few casts with heavy pockets. This was to be expected due to the decent amount of rain we’ve had compared to the last two seasons. Any way looks like it’ll be a cracker season especially once they start to show up around The southern bay islands and nudgee. By the time they migrate to these locations I reckon they will be pretty solid. So if anyone is keen to get out now is the time as they are definitely on!!

Are they all destined for the table, or some for the hook ?

They’re for the table mate, occasionally I might keep some for bait but prefer to eat them. It’s definitely an arduous task sitting down to peel a bucket of prawns to cry Vac. But the amount of reef and beef and crumbed prawn tacos Ive been eating makes it worth while.

That’s a nice haul of prawns, you will be eating a fair few tacos to finish that. 

Only problem I have is the bar crusher cubby, gunwales and outboard all combine to make it awkward to throw a cast net frequently.

When u going prawning do u see any cuddy cabs having a crack or it mostly open tinnies?
 
I wonder if the  Minister of finance Would allow a second boat specifically for prawning

I'd love to catch that many prawns in one cast. Need to learn how to throw Dad's 12 foot top pocket I think, first.

Yeah you definitely see the odd big boat out there but needs a dedicated driver and one person to cast. I’ve done it once in my big boat and it’s a real hassle if there’s lots of boats around. Funnily enough last time I was out, there was a cat that was close to 7 metres with twin 150’s on the back needless to say he had to stay a bit away from the pack

Haha lol when there on at nudgee you’ll know where they are, just point you boat towards the mouth and you’ll see a whole flotilla. It’s literally the busiest spot going. I’ll send you a pm when I hear of any reports from nudgee. They prawns are just outside the mouth just be carful as there is a green zone near there
