BCF was my Fav store when they first opened in slacks creek they had heaps of goodies on sale :woohoo: but soon went sour :(

then they opened the Ipswich store walked out empty handed been there prob 6 times for nothing worth to buy went to have a look at their tld 25 combo for $ 199 they didn't have the rod for that combo told me I had to go to Browns plain store  went there nope not in yet

so I thought I'd get some crimps to make some traces up OH DEAR The poor young fella took me to the boating section after he sought advice from his superior and showed me small cable clamps

so I took the young fella to the game section in his store and showed him what a crimp was and ended up finding them myself and educated him for future reference in a very nice way

I feel really sorry for the kids who get jobs in big stores as they must get bombarded with high tech questions that at their age have no way of knowing due to lack of experience

They will learn :) From us if we help ;)

my answer to the question if you know what you want go to the cheapest place you can find if you are seaching and have nothing in particular in mind stay clear of the Macdonalds of fishing shops and don't overlook Overseas type in Bass pro in google ;)

enough from me

Gaz i totally agree with what you and stinger have said in regards to the young people working in these stores. a month ago i had to explain to a young fella what impoundment meant, after doing so and answering his query on how big impoundment barra get he suggested that i get something like this, holding up a 24kg backbone or something like that. i politely showed him which type of rod he should be showing me and he graciously listened and learned from it. he was tidy, well mannered and keen and one day in the not to distant future will be teaching to me. my beef with these stores is with management and there lack of procedures. any kid with a job is a champion in my book, unlike the little freaks who have nothing better to do than spay paint my front fence.

  • 4 weeks later...

Interesting< I have just joined the forum and was searching for a bit of information on stradic and this topic come up, I was fasinated by some of the comments so I thought I would weigh in, I have two friends that have young fellas working at BCF and they are so happy with a company giving them a go and letting them work where there passion is,

They were knocked back by other fishing places, why because they were young,

Where would I be today if someone had not given me a go,

I shop at Virginia BCF, sometimes lawnton and I do frequent Jones's occasionally and it is all the same,

I always get resonable service, however I am not looking for someone to suck up to me and sell me something I dont want

Anyway, in closing, I think there is a lot of people out there that would agree with me, I am a businessman that has given so many people a chance to earn their stripes, and will continue to

Thanks to Coles my son drives a nice car and enjoys the cash, IGA looks after my other son,

I know a shit load about a particular subect and come across tons of kids working in that industry that dont know squat but I teach them and thanks them for their service

I am sure once you have kids looking for work you will thanks people like Coles, WW, IGA, A-Mart, BCF (and the list goes on)

Regards

Zak

I really dont think it's a matter of these places giving kids a go, it's more a matter of labour costs. They employ kids purely cause they are cheap to keep costs down. And thats why you find they mainly employ them on a casual basis so they can get rid of them quickly.

And as the old saying goes you get what you pay for. Shops like BCF need staff with more product experience overseeing what the younger people do. Unfortunatelly even the so called experience in the shops is lacking. Some of the people in BCF have a genuine interest in Boating, camping fishing, These are the staff that it is worth dealing with. Unfortunatelly a lot of the staff are only there to earn a few bucks and really have no idea and never will.

Everyone should be given a fair go despite their age, but more selective screening on employment should be given. Its not like a supermarket where stacking shelves, using a cash register, smiling and being nice to people are essential. Product knowledge is the key combined wtih these other attributes in a fishing/camping shop. BCf are now trying to target the entire market in these area's not just the weekend warrior or beginner. When you entice customers that have more precise needs then your staff should have the experience to cater for this.

Business is all about making money, BCF obviously do this well but when your target audience changes or increases then your business model should cater for this as well.

Richard.

I think realistically you can't expect a large, wide range department store to have EVERY employee as a specialist in their department.

Thats what specialist stores are about.....

and re kids being employed... I think there are a number of reasons for their employment (some more so than others) - money saving, not many adults to cover casual shifts, not that many fishing specialists that want to work at BCF, giving a keen kid a go.

Having a go at a kid whos trying to show you stuff as if he knows it like the ducks nuts, yep burn him. But kids that are nice and admit that they have no idea, give em some advice. Thats how most of us have learnt what we know.

You pay more for the service but its definitely worth it. And once u start going their regularly they will more often then not give u things the same price if not cheaper then the big chain stores, the smaller stores try 20x harder to keep their customers then bcf, Bcf is where ppl walk in off the street and go because of all the ad's, their the type of ppl bcf target, The smaller or independent stores target fisherman who want good service and they only sell the gear thats reliable and will get the job done. And they will look after you if your a regular custome, Thats the way i see it anyway

i dont go to bcf not because of the young people i do aggre that every one needs to start some were i was once a apprentce and found it hard for some one to realy give me a go and not because i was cheeper then hiring a tradie.

if you worry about price get it off the net bcf is not that cheper it is because i have a small busness and i think if i buy at the smaller chanes that is money in our comuinity bcf is like bunnings they run every one else out of town they open shops right next to there competers then close them dowm after they have done that they jack there prices up and nobody knows any beter
