has anyone else signed up for this comp?...any guesses what "our" target species will be?..was thinking if its barra, you reckon they would care if it came from the barra park?..because ya only get advised bout your target species a day before the comp starts, so doubt it ya would drive up north in time..

just signed up, watched all the vids and read some rules and sh*t

a few thoughts

one of the qld target fish may be barra jimmy, but i doubt it. they are not common enough in the southern half of the state, they only have one target species in the territory and barra will be it.

i'd think it would have to be someting common in both northern and southern waters.

then what about all of the inland fishermen so one will be a fresh water fish and the other will be salt, something that is commonly caught the full length of the qld coast accessable both land and boat based and easy to catch

my thoughts are bass in the fresh and whiting or flathead in the salt

i doubt bream will be involved because only a specialist bream angler would win and they want it open to everyone.

i wonder why nsw gets more target species than the rest of the country?

it does look like a good excuse to spend the day fishing!

Jim, I'm pretty sure one of the rules is that it can't be caught from a privately stocked dam or waterway / farm fish...so barra park is off limits (as is Loch Forbes!;) )

so if bass is it would NPD be okay?

Could be anything. But I reckon that half the challenge.

I have thouroughly read the rules and personally like them. The submission criteria is actually remarkably similar to what I have been toying with for AFO events as introduced last year at events like the Yellowbelly comp and BRC for the shark and catty categories.

Its an interesting concept, how much thought do you think will go into a suitable target species for each state. I mean we are talking some broad geography here.

Im sure the cape york locals that enter for example wont be to able if the species is Australian Bass.

Anyway, im sure they must have considered this.

Ill make another post called Pirtek Fishing Challenge Entries the day before the comp is on. This wat AFO members can see what other AFO members have entered in the comp. Should be interesting.

I reckon its a great one to get involved in. $15 bucks is good value even if you only get the brag mat out of it :P

Quick question on this, I assume its ever man for himself on the actual fishing day once they have declared the 2 types of fish to be targeted. Where is the so called 'referee' in this case? The reason I ask is that I have never been in a fish competition. Let me give you a scenario...imagine they declared it is a Coral Trout. Now I could easily go to a restaurant that I know stocks live Coral Trout, choose the biggest one and post it on that day. What is stopping me from doing that except honesty and integrity...right???

Please someone advise me on that. And also do we currently need a license to fish in QLD?

No you dont need a licence, and as for cheating, well anyone can cheat, its more a fun thing to do to support a worthwhile charity than a serious competition, so if someone cheats and takes out the prize, well that's a bit like knocking off the guide dogs donation tin! A Pretty low act, but not worth getting to worried about. (Unless you catch em!)
